See How Much money Nigerians Abroad Sent Home In 2015

With about $21 billion sent home by Nigerians in diaspora in 2015, the country is the sixth largest receiver of remittances in the world, the Migration of Remittance Factbook 2016 has shown. The country is also by far the largest receiver of remittances in sub-Saharan Africa, receiving a total of $34.8 billion this year. The report, which relied on data gathered from January to December 1, 2015, was compiled by the Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development with support from the World Bank, German, Swedish and Swiss governments. An analysis of the report by PREMIUM TIMES also shows that the United States and the United Kingdom are by far the most lucrative destinations for Nigerian migrants. Nigerians at home received a total of $9.4 billion ($5.7 billion from the US and $3.7 billion from the UK) from both countries in 2015. According to the report, the U.S. is the top remittance-sending country in the world. A total of $56.3 billion was sent out of the US to other parts of the world. The second largest remittance-sending country is Saudi Arabia with $36.9 billion followed by Russia ($32.6 billion), Switzerland ($24.7billion) and Germany ($20.8 billion). The report also shows that the cost of sending money within Africa is the second most expensive in the world (the most expensive being the cost of sending money between Australia to the South Pacific country of Vanuatu). For every $200 remitted from South Africa to Zambia, senders are charged 19 per cent. The cost is 17.4 per cent to send the same amount from South Africa- Botswana and 17.3 per cent from Tanzania to Uganda. In comparison, it cost just 0.6 per cent to send the same amount of money from Saudi Arabia to Nepal and 3.1 per cent from the United Arab Emirate to anywhere in the world. Migration According to the report, Nigeria is the third most preferred destination for migrants in Africa after South Africa and Ivory Coast. Nigeria is the fifth emigration country in the continent behind Somalia, Burkina Faso, Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo. The report observed that 2.5 per cent (23.2 million) of the total population of sub-Saharan Africa are migrants. The study showed that Africa is by far the choicest destination for African migrants. 84.6 per cent of African migrants are living within the region. While 4.2 per cent African migrants are found in high-income countries such as the US and in the European Union. The top 10 migrant destinations in the world, the report revealed, are the US (46.1 million), Saudi Arabia (14.6 million), Germany (11.1 million), Russia (11 million), United Arab Emirate (8 million), UK (7.8 million), France (7.5 million), Canada (7.4 million), Spain (6.6 million) and Australia (6.5 million). Boko Haram Militants Close To Defeat – Buhari Tells BBC

The Nigerian military is close to completely defeating Islamist Boko Haram militants, President Muhammadu Buhari has told the BBC He said the militants could no longer mount conventional attacks against security forces or population centres. “I think, technically, we have won the war,” he said. The president has given the army until the end of the month to defeat Boko Haram, whose six-year insurgency has devastated north-eastern Nigeria. But the BBC’s Bashir Sa’ad Abdullahi in the capital, Abuja, says that the deadline is likely to be extended as Boko Haram is still bombing areas despite losing towns under its control. Critics of the government argue that it has exaggerated the scale of its success against the militants, and that each time the army claims to have wiped out Boko Haram, the militants have quietly rebuilt. The insurgency is said to have killed some 17,000 people and left more than two million homeless. The jihadists have been forced to cut back on suicide bombings as a result of the military action against them, President Buhari said. “Boko Haram has reverted to using improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” he said. “They have now been reduced to that.” “Boko Haram is an organised fighting force, I assure you, [but] we have dealt with them.” He said the militants had all but been driven out from Adamawa and Yobe states and remained a force only in its heartland of Borno state. “They cannot now marshal forces and attack towns or attack military installations and so on as they did before. “I don’t think this is mad talking.” The president said that Nigeria had reorganised and reequipped the military. which had received training from the British, the Americans and the French. “A lot is being done,” he said.

Read President Buhari’s Christmas Message To Nigerians

I felicitate with all Nigerians, especially our Christian brothers and sisters, on the joyous occasion of this year’s Christmas. On this occasion of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us all rededicate ourselves to the virtues of peace, love, honesty, justice, equity, piety, humility and service to others which he taught. There can be no doubt that a greater manifestation of these virtues and ideals in our lives will immensely help us to become a more united, peaceful, secure and progressive nation. Let us also reach out in love and compassion to fellow Nigerians who are in distress at this period of our nation’s history. I particularly urge you all to remember victims of terrorism and insurgency in the country, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The Federal Government will continue to collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ease the harsh conditions in IDP camps, while the ultimate objective remains to quickly put an end to insurgency and return the IDPs to their homes. We must never again allow any group to hold the nation to ransom under whatever guise. Let us also not allow current socio-economic and security challenges to dampen our expectations for a better Nigeria. This administration has taken a number of measures to restore hope to our people. The 2016 Budget defines our commitment to giving Nigeria a new lease of life. Our change slogan is not a campaign gimmick but a promise that must be kept. We are determined to bring about tangible changes in the lives of our people. In this regard, efforts will be intensified to recover stolen funds, block revenue leakages and enthrone due process, transparency and accountability. Public office is a public trust that must be held to the highest ethical standards. I wish all Nigerians a Merry Christmas. Please drive carefully. MUHAMMADU BUHARI
