22-Yr-Old Surrenders To Police After Killing Cousin Over Girlfriend

Just like Macbeth, in Shakespeare’s play of same name, murdered sleep and could no longer sleep, 22-year-old Ndifreke Joseph Clement, disturbed by sleepless nights and traumatic experiences after murdering his 23-year-old cousin, Ubong Edet, surrendered himself to police six months after the crime.

Clement, a native of Akon Itam, Itu Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, who handed himself over to police at Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, said he slashed his cousin’s throat after beating him to coma because Edet slept with his girlfriend in August 2015.

He told Vanguard: “I cannot remember the exact date now, but it occurred in a night in August 2015 in the one room apartment we shared. On that day, I returned from work to meet the door locked.

“I knocked on the door and waited for over five minutes before my cousin could come to open the door. When I went into the room, I saw my girlfriend weeping and blood running from her nostrils.

“I asked her what happened and she said Ubong beat, wounded and forcefully had s*x with her. But after opening the door for me, Ubong went away and did not come back until very late in the night.

‘We fought for a very long time’ “When I asked him why he did what he did to my girlfriend, he started punching me and I retaliated.

“We fought for a very long time before I could subdue him. I then picked my cow-butchering knife and cut his throat, carried his dead body and dumped it in the bush very close to the house and threw the knife into the pit toilet. “I have brought myself to the police even when nobody knew that I killed him. I have come to plead for forgiveness because since I killed my cousin, I no longer have peace of mind. I am always disturbed in my mind and dream.”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said the suspect would be arraigned for the court to decide whether he had any right to take the life of another person.

MTN Reveals Disturbing Message To Ondo Subscribers – See What They Sent

Telecommunication giants, MTN has issued a disturbing message to its subscribers in a South-west state concerning services.

Millions of subscribers in Ondo State and its environs would likely experience negative impacts on the quality of MTN Nigeria services following the closure of its facilities by the state government, according to DailyTrust.

The telecoms operator said so in a statement issued by its corporate communications executive, Amina Oyagbola, adding that services that will be affected comprised voice and data services, voice traffic across other operators and international traffic, enterprise data service to third-party clients (mostly banks and other corporate clients), which may, in turn, impact services such as ATMs, POS and others.

The Ondo State Government, on December 23, last year, sealed MTN’s base transmission stations (BTS) in the state over tax-related issues.

The sealing followed a court order against MTN regarding a tax claim of N458.5 million allegedly owed the Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue Service (OSBIRS) in pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) deductions, withholding tax (WHT), development levy, business premises tax and education endowment tax.

What Buhari Achieved In Seven Months – Presidency

The Presidency has risen in defence of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying he has achieved a lot in the area of fighting corruption in the seven months of his administration.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said this in a statement on Wednesday.

Shehu was reacting to a recent report by the Centre for Democracy and Development which claimed that Buhari had only achieved one out of his 222 tracked electoral promises, representing 0.5 per cent of the promises.

The CDD had based its report on critical sectors such as security, the economy, fighting corruption, oil and gas, agriculture, and social and environmental sectors. But the presidential spokesman said it was mischievous to attribute to the President promises he did not make during the campaigns and hold him accountable.

While advising leaders of the CDD to rise above what he called petty partisanship and stop misleading Nigerians, Shehu said any unbiased person would recognise the achievement so far made by Buhari in curbing corruption.

According to him, no sincere Nigerian will fail to recognise the courage of the President to tackle corruption in a country where impunity was once celebrated.

The presidential spokesman added that within seven months, Buhari had successfully blocked the leakages in the system.

He said as a result of these efforts, the Nigeria Customs Service had quadrupled its revenue base within seven months, a feat the service could not achieve in years.

“Doesn’t the President deserve credit for this and other efforts to confront the monster of corruption?” Shehu asked. On the economy, he said it was wrong to blame the President for the falling oil prices in the world market, a challenge which he said had made Buhari lay emphasis on economic diversification. He recalled that President Barack Obama of the United States had inherited an economy in crisis in 2009 and was not judged in his first seven months in office.

Shehu explained that in the case of Buhari, it was a double tragedy because he inherited an economy in crisis on account of declining oil revenues and an economy also ravaged by large-scale corruption. He, however, said progress was being made in recovering the nation’s stolen funds.

He said an escrow account had been opened for that purpose. Shehu added, “He (Buhari) is making good strides towards improving governance by tackling corruption. Till date, a good number of persons believed to have collectively stolen billions from taxpayers have been arrested and are facing the courts. “We are working with our allies across the world from Britain and America to France and Germany to China and the UAE to source, locate and repatriate misappropriated funds.

“So far, an escrow account has been opened for money that is being returned. This is only the start. The return of stolen funds is important, but it is just as critical to ensure that those who seek to steal realise that no longer will there be such impunity in Nigeria.” He said Buhari’s war against corruption and terrorism had become a template for Africa and the rest of the world. The presidential spokesman said it was, however, ironic that at home, some individuals were not prepared to give these successes the recognition they deserved.

Shehu said, “The latest CDD episode is a shocking reminder to their failed attempt to hold the President to ‘100 promises in 100 days’ which disastrously crashed on the head of the proponent.

“The elevation of the act to a new high of 220 promises is a knee-jerk reaction that seeks to play to the gallery and score points against the President.”

N11.5bn Fraud: Bishop And Bank MD Remanded In Prison

A Federal High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Wednesday ordered the prison remand of the Managing Director of Dadin Kowa Microfinance Bank Limited, Mr. Irmiya Jatau, over N11.5bn fraud.

Also remanded was the Bishop of Maranatha Church, Jonas Katung, who was charged alongside Jatau by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which accused them of defrauding hundreds of depositors. The accused were slammed with 24 counts before Justice Musa Kurya.

Joined with them in the charge are one Okewole Dayo and Dadin Kowa Microfinance Bank Limited. The EFCC alleged that the defendants conspired to defraud over 64,000 customers of the defunct Covenant Fadama Cooperative Society to the tune of N11.5 bn.

In one of the counts filed against the accused, the EFCC alleged that sometime in 2012, they “did conspire with yourselves to commit money laundering contrary to Section 18 (a )of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, as amended by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2012 and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

They were also accused of transferring the sum of N50m from Covenant Fadama Cooperative Society account to a First Bank account, with number 2003050001625, into the Dadin Kowa Microfinance, First Bank account Number-2016452671.

This sum, the count said, represented proceeds of unlawful acts and amounted to an offence contrary to Section 15 (25) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended by the Money Laundering amendment (Prohibition) Act 2012 and punishable under Section 54 of the same Act, among others.

But when the charges were read to them, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty, except Bishop Katung, who pleaded guilty to one of the counts before he suddenly changed his mind and pleaded not guilty like others. Katung had earlier on December 9, 2015, been granted bail before the case was adjourned till Wednesday.

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. L. P. Asor, said Jatau was not covered by the bail application earlier granted to the accused persons because no charge was preferred against him as of the time the bail application was granted to the bishop who is the first accused person in the charge. According to the EFCC, the charges against the bank MD were only filed two days before.

However, while opposing the bail application, the prosecuting counsel argued that the bail granted to the first accused person should also apply to the bank MD since he is one of the co-accused persons in the entire case.

After hearing the argument from the defence and prosecution counsel, the presiding judge ruled in favour of the prosecution and ordered that the bank MD be remanded in prison pending when his bail application would be filed and considered by the court. The case was adjourned till March 7 for further hearing.

Pope Francis To Make ‘Acting’ Debut In Spiritual Film….

Pope Francis will mark his acting debut in a new religious film aimed at children in which he will tell them ‘how and where to find Jesus’, Italian producers said on Monday.

Beyond the Sun, from Rome-based distribution and production company AMBI, is described as a family adventure based on the Gospels ‘where children from different cultures emulate the apostles while searching for Jesus in the world around them’.

The project, financed by AMBI co-founders Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi, tells the story of a group of children ‘learning from their experiences in a forest using love, hope and faith’, the company said in its website.

All profits from the film will be donated to Argentinean charities El Alemendro and Los Hogares de Cristo, which aid at-risk children and young adults. The film ends ‘with an epilogue from Pope Francis telling children how and where to find Jesus’, AMBI said.

Bacardi said, ‘It is a great honor for Andrea and I to have the opportunity to work with His Holiness, Pope Francis, to spread the awareness of his message, through this film.’ However, a Vatican spokesman played down Pope Francis’ role in the movie telling Mail Online that the pope ‘is not an actor’.

AMBI said filming would start later in 2016 and the company will oversee worldwide distribution for ‘Beyond the Sun’ through its Los Angeles-based international sales division.
