Tears, Blood & Sorrow, As Woman Crushes Eight To Death In Lagos

Tragedy struck on Ilaje Road, in the Bariga area of Lagos State, after a female motorist in a LandCruiser Sport Utility Vehicle crushed eight pedestrians to death. It was gathered that among the dead were a pregnant woman, two siblings, an old woman and a man returning from his place of work. Several others were also said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures and broken limbs in the Saturday incident which happened around 9pm.

Punchcorrespondents gathered that the driver of the yet-to-be-identified woman had left the vehicle for her near Majok Filling Station on Ilaje Road and had left for his house. The woman, said to be staying on Adebisi Street, had barely taken the wheels to drive the SUV home when the incident occurred. The vehicle reportedly surged forward, crushing pedestrians and killing four of them on the spot.

A set of nine injured people were reportedly taken to the Gbagada General Hospital, among whom two died; while another set of seven casualties were later recovered. It was learnt that two more corpses were found in the gutter on Sunday morning. Angry youths were said to have gone to the scene and dragged the woman out of the SUV and beaten her up.

She was about to be lynched when some policemen from the Bariga Police Division intervened.

Punch Metro learnt that the suspect was to celebrate her birthday on Sunday and was going home to make preparations for the event before the incident.

When Punch correspondents visited the area on Monday, about 20 okada riders (motorcyclists) besieged the police station to demand the corpses of two of the people who were killed in the accident.

A resident, identified as Iya Oyinbo, said the vehicle seemed to have had a brake failure. She said, “The woman was driven to the Majok Filling Station by her driver after which the man left for his house and the woman moved to the driver’s seat to drive the vehicle home. What we saw was that the SUV suddenly surged forward and hit a pedestrian at the filling station. “The vehicle also moved from there to hit some pedestrians by the roadside. It was three stationary faulty cars at the end of the Ilaje Road which eventually stopped the SUV.

“Four persons were crushed and they died instantly, including a woman, who was pregnant, and was taken inside a Keke Napep. On Sunday, two other hospitalised victims died.”

Another witness, Raheem Banji, said the corpses of two motorcyclists were found the following morning in the gutter where the SUV had flung them. He said, “There were two okada riders who fell inside a gutter on that day. It was on Sunday that we found them. After the accident, youths gathered and began to beat up the woman for being careless. The mob wanted to destroy the car, but for the arrival of the policemen who saved her.” A Keke Marwa driver, Laide Olakune, said he was lucky to have escaped, adding that his tricycle was badly damaged by the vehicle.

Olakunle said he was taking four passengers to the Ebute area, when the tricycle was hit and they all fell into the gutter.

“Although my tricycle was damaged, neither me nor any of my passengers sustained injuries. The police wanted to take away my tricycle as part of evidence, but I refused because I need to repair it and put it back on the road so I can make a living,” he said. A police source said the female driver, who was rescued with injuries, was recuperating in a private hospital in the area.

He said, “The woman is wealthy, and she was to celebrate her birthday on Sunday. The mob stripped her to the underwear and beat her up. My Wife Beats Me To Coma At Every Chance’ – 65-Year-Old Man Cries Out

A 65-year-old man has approached an Asaba High Court, Delta State to dissolve his marriage with his wife who he accused of always beating him up. The petitioner, a father of four, who preferred anonymity lamented in court how he married the woman after his first wife died because he craved for a companion.

However, he got more than he bargained for as he claimed he suffered severe beatings from the woman.

Narrating his ordeal in court, the man said: “I married my wife in 1998 and did the church wedding at Catholic Church of Assumption, Zappa, in Asaba. Since then, we have two children; a boy and a girl, but this woman always threatens to kill me, she beats me at every chance, and many times, I go into coma. She vowed that she must kill me and she sent all my children packing, I cannot continue with the marriage.

“She beats me most times, but it came to a climax on January 17, 2016, when she took something and hit my head in an attempt to kill me, so that I would not be able to pursue the divorce case in court, but thank God, her mission did not come to reality as I overcame her plan.

“She is a harlot, she beats me every day. I cannot eat her food again because she is a harlot. It is against my tradition and I want the marriage dissolved before she kills me.”

However, on her own part, the woman denied her husband’s claims before the court, wondering why she would harbour plots to kill her husband. “What will make me to beat or attempt to kill my husband? We stay in the same house, sleep on the same bed, I am taking good care of him, but I don’t know what is wrong,” she said.

According to reports, there has not been enough evidence to prove that the complainant suffered physical abuse from his wife.

However, the case remains in court, while the trial judge demands his first son as a witness to the allegations, the case was adjourned to Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

About Half Of The University Graduates In Nigeria Cannot Find Jobs

Much of the talk in Nigeria since the turn of the year has been about the biting economic crisis which has been triggered by a dip in global oil prices. As the country’s main export and largest source of revenue, the fall in oil prices has resulted in lower foreign exchange earnings for the country which will, this year, be running a record deficit budget.

So far, the stock market and currency slide have been the key indicators for the crisis but a survey by Jobberman, a leading recruitment agency in the West African region, provides another damning statistic.

According to the survey, taken by almost 90,000 people, 47% of the country’s university graduates are unemployed in Africa’s largest economy. By some estimates Nigerian tertiary education institutions produce up to 500,000 graduates every year and there are also Nigerian graduates who study abroad who come home to compete for jobs.

Jobberman describes the new data as a sign of the “need for urgent actions on both public and private sector operators”. In the last few years, as the number of unemployed university graduates has climbed, employers have attributed the problem to the quality of university education and have described some graduates as ‘unemployable’ as they lack required skills. Nigeria’s university system, which holds about 150 schools, is mostly over-populated and can only cater to 40% of applicants annually. This suggests that universities likely struggle to deliver quality education as resources are stretched.

The sentiment is also shared among Nigerian parents who, according to StudySearch, a London-based educational start-up, are estimated to save as much as $50,000 to finance their kid’s education outside the country. Primarily, while criticism of local universities is valid in some cases, parents also believe foreign education provides an edge in a very competitive labor market.

According to Jobberman, ways to solve the problem include creating secondary skills development and acquisition programs as well as government investment in job creation schemes. President Buhari insists job creation is a priority for his government and has drawn a link between unemployment and the country’s insecurity concerns.

25-Year-Old Man Sent To Kirikiri Prison For Stealing One Bottle Of Beer In Lagos

A Lagos resident was today, Monday, February 1st, arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate court for allegedly stealing a bottle of beer valued at N250. A 25-year old tiler identified as Abdullah Idris, who resides at number 24, Ogunbambi Street, Dopemu in Lagos State, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate court for allegedly stealing a bottle of beer valued at N250.

He was charged with stealing, contrary to section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Inspector Idowu Onime who is the Persecutor, while testifying in court, said that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 23 at 36, Adebisi Awosoga St., Dopemu.

Idris was said to had taken one bottle of beer while it was been offloaded from a carton into a shop. “It was someone who saw him drinking the beer that alerted one of the staff and he was apprehended,” said Onime. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Miss A. R. Onilogbo, however, ordered that the suspect be remanded in Kirikiri prison while adjourning the case till February 10th for sentencing.

My mistake was that I didn’t go to the hospital to ask them whether my wife was their patient when I wasn’t around. I got so worried that my brother decided to know what she was up to.

So my brother asked his friend to woo my wife, lets know whether he can be able to make her talk.

35-Year Old Man Pokes Finger In 3 Months Old Baby As Doctor Confirms She Has Been Defiled

A 35-year-old man,Oladele Oladunmoni, who allegedly poked his finger into the private part of a 3-month-old baby, was today arraigned in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos. Oladunmoni who resides at No. 25, Dagbolu St., Idi-Iroko, Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a charge of child abuse.

The prosecutor, Insp. Rita Momah, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 18 at his residence. Momah said the accused, who lives in the same building with the mother of the baby, viciously forced his finger into the baby’s vagina.

A medical doctor who examined the baby, confirmed that she was defiled, he said. She said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. NAN reports that Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders of child rape.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case till March 14 for mention.
