Ezekwesili Urges Pres. Buhari To Tell Nigerians The Truth About The War Against Boko Haram

Former Minister of EducationOby Ezekwesiliwho is championing the Bring-Back-Our-Girls campaign has urged President Buhari to tell Nigerians the truth about the war against Boko Haram.

She said: “The government cannot afford to go to the old ways where lies were fed to the people. Let there be truthfulness. Government should not create a trust deficit syndrome because it will be difficult to mend. Everything that the government is doing concerning the war, they should tell the truth. We will get used to it and join in the solution.” “What drove us out of our comfort zone is that we got tired of not doing anything. We will continue with our core value. No matter what anyone want to do, this advocacy will continue. A pledge is a pledge. We made a pledge to parents of the Chibok girls and will not fail in this pledge.”

“We have gone through a lot. But what we have gone through is little of what the 219 girls are going through in the hands of the Boko Haram sect. Let nobody succeed in making us feel we should not continue. We will continue until the girls are back. The girls deserve justice and they have not been given justice. We are unhappy that they are spending close to two years in the hands of the terrorists.”

“I have not lost hope. There is no basis to lose hope. Though we might be depressed sometimes, we won’t lose hope. We will stand for the girls. We will hold on to the commitment the president made to the Chibok girls’ parents and Nigerians. We believe that he will keep his promise and bring the girls back.”

“Some people have been vocal about our Chibok girls, but now they feel the Chibok girls are distractions. Our Chibok girls are not distractions”.

Zika Case Raises Concerns That Virus Can Be Transmitted S€.xually

A case of the Zika virus being transmitted between sexual partners reported on Tuesday in Texas has raised new concerns about the transmission of the disease, which is typically spread by mosquitoes and can cause birth defects.

The patient, whose gender has not been released, was the first person confirmed to have been infected with the virus in the US.

Cases of Zika being spread by sexual contact have only rarely been reported, and health authorities had previously treated the idea that sexual transmission was possible as theory rather than documented science.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on Tuesday that the patient had contacted the virus after having sexual contact with someone who had travelled to a country where Zika is present. The Dallas County health department said the sexual partner had travelled to Venezuela, but that the patient had not left the country, and had been infected in Texas.

“Dallas County Health and Human Services has received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the first Zika virus case acquired through sexual transmission in Dallas County in 2016,” the department said a statement. Zachary Thompson, the health department’s director, said the case proved that Zika could be transmitted sexually.

“Now that we know Zika virus can be transmitted through s*x, this increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others,” he said. “Next to abstinence, condoms are the best prevention method against any sexually-transmitted infections.”

A total of 31 people in the US are believed to have been diagnosed with Zika in the US in the past 12 months, but all of those cases originated in Central and South America, where the virus is more prevalent.

Symptoms are typically mild in adults, but babies whose mothers have contacted the disease can be born with smaller heads and brains.

Brazil has been the country worst-affected by Zika, though the virus has been reported in more than 20 countries.

29-Year-Old Arik Staff ‘Grace Utum’ Goes Missing After Visiting Boyfriend

A worker with Arik Air,Grace Utum, has gone missing after a visit to her lover, Ihuoma Amelogu, who lives in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the 29-year-old Cross River State indigene had left her Ikeja office for her lover’s house on January 1, 2016. However, her whereabouts had since been shrouded in mystery. Grace, a graduate of Accounting, University of Calabar, was said to be working in the hospitality department of Arik. The case was reported at the Ojodu Police Division and Amelogu was reportedly arrested.

It was learnt that a mobile phone and a handbag belonging to the victim were found in his apartment on the day Grace went missing. He was, however, released after police said there was nothing to connect him with the disappearance.

An uncle of the victim, Felix Omini, explained that the family became worried after her mother called one of her telephone lines and a stranger picked the call.

He said, “Her mother called her that night and discovered that it was a stranger that picked the call. The stranger said the phone was missing and its owner had called him and said she was coming for it in company with a man.

“Grace’s mother called her boyfriend, Amelogu, thinking he was the man the stranger was referring to. But he said he had also been trying to reach her without success.”

Omini said he called 32-year-old Amelogu and together they went to report the matter at the police station. The victim’s father, Obongha Utum, said Grace and Amelogu had been dating for three years and would have been married, but for a problem with their blood compatibility.

He said, “The police said we should talk to the boyfriend because that was where she said she was going, but I don’t know what to think. They are church members and were supposed to have been married; but that became impossible after they discovered their genotypes were not compatible.

“We have also gone to Agbado Crossing in Ogun State, where she lived with a friend. We didn’t meet anybody in the house; everywhere was deserted.” When contacted, Amelogu said he last communicated with Grace around 3pm on January 1. He explained that efforts to get across to her through her friends had been abortive.

He said, “We were together on December 31, 2015; she slept at my place. She sometimes stayed at my place because her office in Ikeja is closer to my house in Ojodu Berger. She rented an apartment in Agbado Crossing, Ogun State.

“Around 6am on January 1, she said she was going to the office. We always had a family reunion every New Year at my uncle’s place in Ajah, so we planned to meet there.

“I spoke with her around 12 noon. Then around 3pm, when I was at my uncle’s place, we communicated again and I asked if she was still coming. She said she was rounding off at the office and would soon join me.”

The civil engineer said his girlfriend’s line, however, became unreachable around 5pm and despite calling till 7pm, he didn’t get through. He said her mother called him from Port Harcourt around 10pm to ask if he had seen her daughter.

“Her mother said she called her and a stranger picked it and said the phone was missing. I was surprised because she (Grace) didn’t call me that she had misplaced her phone.

“I decided to call the number myself, but it was unreachable. I kept calling till 2am, when it was switched off,” he added.

It was gathered that Grace’s family contacted a telecommunication company to track her calls, but they were asked to get a court order. Access to her bank accounts were also said to have been blocked.

The Arik Air spokesperson, Adebanji Ola, confirmed the incident, adding that the company was working with the family and the police to get to the roots of the case.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, also confirmed the incident, adding that the police arrested Amelogu and later released him.

She said, “Necessary police procedure to be done in the case of the missing person has been done. The boyfriend, who was actually the complainant, was arrested and investigated, but there was nothing to link him with Grace’s disappearance, hence his release. But investigation is ongoing.

Edo Hospital Better Than Many In Europe, Asia… Oshiomhole Boasts

Governor Adams Oshiomholeof Edo State has said that the newly constructed state’s 200-bed Central Hospital in Benin, is more beautiful and will be better equipped than many hospitals in Europe and Asia.

The governor who spoke on Tuesday during an inspection of the hospital, assured that the 200-bed Central Hospital which has attained 98 per cent completion, will be adequately maintained to ensure its durability and effective service delivery to the people. “When I said at the beginning that our intention is to build what I called a five-star hospital, most people tried to imagine what that meant, but I am sure just looking at the building, I don’t know of any hospital in Nigeria, in terms of aesthetics, that has a better appeal than this. And this is the sort of thing you find in Europe, and some other advanced economies. If you are in the 21st Century, begin to think as if you are in the 22nd Century because the world has changed and it will keep changing. The pace of change will keep accelerating.

“The whole idea is that when a typical Edo person comes from a village like mine, if he gets in here and realizes that even the environment psychologically impacts on him and he begins to appreciate that he is important, he is in the hands of professional healthcare providers, that way, that forgotten rural man, for once, will have access to modern facilities. You don’t need to go to London, to India, to Europe to be told how hospitals look there. I am sure that those of you who may have for one reason or another travelled, will agree that there are many hospitals in Europe and in India that are not as beautiful as this.

“And so, I believe that a hundred years from now, this hospital will not look outdated. You will see that as you look at the internal finishing, we took into account the conventional challenges you have with public building, problem of painting and repainting, and with the facials that you have, you will never need to do repainting, all you need is proper cleaning at regular intervals.

“The only thing we must now do is to address the critical issue of the human factor. Once the hospital is open, we must re-engage the doctors on the rules of engagement. We won’t invest in this kind of facility, and a doctor comes in to clock in one hour, and goes back to do his private practice, and then collects a cheque for one month.

“I think we provide a hospital that can provide for everyone, both the rich and the poor. There won’t be a difference in treatment for the poor and the rich.”
