Boko Haram members and the Nigerian troop are presently in a serious gun battle in Bita town near Gwoza in Borno state after the sect members attempted to invade Gwoza town yesterday night. Residents say the fighting started when the sect members attacked a military facility in Bita town and were approaching Gwoza when they met a stiff opposition from the Nigerian troops. The gun battle which started at about 10pm continued into this morning. Military fighter jets from Yola have been dispatched to the area. Gwoza is one of the Borno towns recaptured from the militants, and some of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the area returned there recently on the assurance that normalcy has been restored to the area.
Good one! Former President, Goodluck Jonathan Wins African Leadership Person Of The Year Award
Jonathan’s victory was disclosed in a letter sent to him by former, Pro Tempore president of the Liberian senate and chairman of the 2015 African Leadership Person of the Year selection committee, Cletus Wortoson. The letter in part reads :
“There is no one best suited at the moment than your excellency, to advise the continent’s leaders on the merits of good governance and enduring democracy”. Your popular mantra of ‘one man one vote’ and ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,’ is a message that must be preached loud and clear on the continent, hence our endorsement. It is with great pleasure that I bring you the news of your selection as the African Leadership Magazine Person of the Year, 2015.
Chief among the many factors we considered was your efforts towards promoting good governance in Africa through the promotion of free and fair elections across the continent. Your recent assignment to Tanzania received accolades and international acclaim, because you discharged the responsibility most creditably.
We resolved that there is no one best suited at the moment than Your Excellency, to advise the continent’s leaders on the merits of good governance and enduring democracy. The board is fully persuaded that you have served your country, Nigeria, meritoriously, conducted a free and fair election, in which you lost and yet conceded defeat, a development seeing by many in the continent as historical. Your popular mantra of ‘one man one vote’ and ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,’ is a message that must be preached loud and clear on the continent, hence our endorsement.

Good news! Anambra To Begin Export Of Rice Soon – Governor Obiano
Obiano also said the state’s Ministry of Agriculture had cultivated a special brand of pumpkin and bitter leaf. Obiano announced these during the inauguration of Justice Development and Peace Caritas 2016 Week by the Catholic Diocese in Awka on Sunday. Obiano called on his people to become self-sufficient by cultivating the fertile land to grow and export vegetables. The governor and his wife, Ebelechukwu, were later honoured as the Grand Pillar and Mother of Charity respectively by the JDPC.
Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese in Akwa, said the award was in recognition of their contributions to improving the lives of the poorest of the poor in the state. Ezeokafor said: “It is also for the numerous development strides his administration had done to better the lots of Ndi Anambra.”
Ezeokafor, whose homily centred on the prodigal son in St. Luke, urged Christians to avail themselves of the second chance provided for them through Christ to return to God and to always show mercy and pity for others. The bishop said national growth demands contributions from every Nigerian, and advised against infringement on human rights by those in authority.
He called on security operatives to always discharge their duties in a patriotic manner, saying that every Nigerian deserved to be treated with respect not intimidation.
The Director of JDPC in Awka, Rev. Fr. Simon Anigbogu, said the award was well deserved “with special reference to the adequate security instituted by the governor making Anambra the safest state in Nigeria”.
Anigbogu also extolled the governor’s wife for her special programmes for the less privileged and called for collaboration with her foundation for maximum benefit to the poor in the society. NAN.
