We Won’t Retreat Until Chibok Girls Are Rescued – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his government would not retreat in its fight against the Boko Haram insurgents until the over 200 schoolgirls were rescued from the terrorists strongholds.

He also described as “commendable”, decision by former President Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat at the 2015 President election.

President Buhari who spoke to the parliament of the European Union in Strasbourg, France, stated that he remained committed to the promise he made to the parents of the abducted girls that his administration would rescue them alive.

“As I have stated at other fora, the action of Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, is commendable. For the first time in the history of Nigeria, a presidential candidate and sitting President, conceded electoral defeat in defiance of calls by strong forces and agents and benefactors of the regime not to do so”, Buhari stated.

Speaking on the rescue of the Chibokgirls and Boko Haram insurgents, Buhari said: “It may interest you to know that in a recent meeting I had with parents of the Chibok girls, I assured them that government would not rest until all the girls are rescued alive and reunited with their families. I remain fully committed to this pledge. “Since my assumption of office in May last year, we have re-organised the Nigerian Armed Forces and repositioned them to deal decisively with the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Indeed, all the Local Government Areas that were hitherto under the control of the Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in the North-Eastern flank of Nigeria, have been recaptured.

“The Internally Displaced Persons are gradually returning to their communities. The Federal Government is committed to rebuilding schools, hospitals and other vital infrastructure destroyed by the fleeing terrorists.

“Currently, the activities of Boko Haram have been reduced to the Sambisa Forest and their capacity to launch major offensives has been degraded. “Boko Haram has now resorted to attacking soft targets such as markets, mosques and churches using innocent, underage, hapless children to detonate locally made Improvised Explosive Devices.”

Police Set To Introduce Stun Guns As Officers Misuse Firearms

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has said that stun guns will soon be introduced as part of efforts to reduce casualties associated with misuse of firearms by police officers. He said the Police authority was trying to discourage issuing firearms to police officers, who go on metro patrol. He noted that stun guns may be introduced this year.

On how stun gun works, Arase said: “Stun guns can incapacitate you, demobilise you, but they will not kill you. So, in case there is a mistake, then we will be able to ensure that the fatality is not such that will result in death.

“It is also true that from statistics we have internal mechanisms for dealing with people who engage in misuse of firearms and I must tell you that many of them have been dismissed. But it is not every day you will see it on the pages of the paper that they have been dismissed.”

Arase also spoke on the rate of Kidnapping in the country, he admitted that the rate of kidnapping was increasing and poses a challenge to the police.

He said: “In my opening remark, I mentioned that we have serious challenges with kidnapping in some areas in the country because it is not all over the country and once these things happen, the way the press publicises it gives the impression that there is a near state of anomie; but this is not true.”

He said: “We have a new challenge now in Lagos because after we have been able to mop up the bank robbers that come from the waterways, it looks as if they have found a new vocation in kidnapping, especially in Festac and Amuwo Odofin.

“We are addressing those issues and I can assure you that those people will be caught. It takes time though; you know crime is always committed but the indomitable fighting spirit of the police force has to be strengthened and that is what we are trying to do, he said.

The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Failed Rail Contracts, yesterday, discovered 169 ghost companies that registered as contractors with the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, for projects valued at N1 trillion.

The ad hoc committee raised the alarm during the investigative hearing at the National Assembly complex, Abuja that none of the 169 companies invited by the committee had shown up.

Chairman of the committee, Johnson Agbonnayinman, (Ikpoba/Okha federal constituency), lamented that efforts to reach the companies invilved in the failed rail contract had so far proven fruitless.

“You gave them the job, so you should produce them; we are holding you responsible.” he insisted.
